Undertaking an apprenticeship is a great career choice for young people looking for a hands on approach to learning while developing the skills and techniques to ultimately achieve a qualification.

And best part is, it allows young people the opportunity to get paid while they train!

Rebecca Wellington is a young person doing exactly that, kick-starting her career in not only a traditional trade but a profession she loves with continued training and support. Rebecca has always had an interest in Aviation and is currently located at Ballarat Airport undertaking a Cert IV Aeroskills (Mechanical) with Field Air.

Rebecca’s journey begun as a Customer Service Officer at Broome International Airport.  “I realised that Aviation was definitely my passion, enjoying every minute,” she says.

She wanted to learn more and understand how aircrafts get from the ground to the sky, how they stay in the sky, and how they then descend to land safely.

“I could not think of a better way to understand more about aircraft than to become an Aircraft Engineer,” she says.

Gaining an apprenticeship is an exciting prospect for a young person and presents many opportunities in a desired industry. Rebecca acquired a work experience position at Field Air, offering her a taste of the industry and reassured her passion and career pathway. “I showed the team at Field Air my dedicated work ethic and what I was capable of and soon after joined the team permanently,” she says.

Rebecca is learning each day and undertakes a combination of time at TAFE and structured workplace training. She explains study can be easily maintained, “If you are dedicated and have a study plan, it is easy to manage”.

Release time from work is important for apprentices to achieve their study goals, and is a requirement under the Training Contract. Field Air are pro-active with Rebecca’s training and study requirements, providing her adequate time to complete tasks and full support whilst working.

Further studies are on the cards for Rebecca after completing her apprenticeship. She explains that she will look at her options down the track, and is favourable to the opportunities presented by additional study can lead, “opening doors to work on many different types of aircraft with the potential to work almost anywhere in the world”.

The future is bright for this young lady, who is finding her way and committing to her childhood passion in a traditional trade.
