The NSW Government has announced an investment of $10 million to cut fees for courses in disability and aged-care services, to meet expected increases in demand for skilled workers after the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Under the $10 million commitment, courses which had cost up to $5000 for qualifications including Disability, Community Services, Auslan and Aged Care will be free, even for students already holding TAFE certifications.

“The Government predicts an extra 25000 skilled and dedicated workers will be needed to deliver the NDIS,” Apprenticeship Support Australia’s General Manager NSW, Andrew Williams said today.

“This investment will open up opportunities for people to kick-start careers in the burgeoning disability and aged-care sectors, where their skills will be valued for years to come,” Mr Williams said.

NSW Minister for Skills John Barilaro has also announced students with a disability will be eligible for free vocational education and training courses on the NSW Skills List.

From next year, disabled students will be able to enrol free in any TAFE course on the Skills List.

The updated List is due to be released soon.
