Further assistance for apprentices and trainees

Following the Federal Government’s announcement of the JobKeeper Payment on 30 March 2020, Apprenticeship Support Australia is pleased to announce an extension to the Supporting Apprenticeships and Traineeships wage subsidy to further support Group Training Organisations (GTOs).

The Government will increase the value of the wage subsidy to $1,500 per fortnight for GTOs where the host employer of any size is receiving the JobKeeper Payment and retains their apprentice or trainee.

This support will be delivered through the apprenticeship payment system rather than the ATO which is administering the JobKeeper payment.

As apprenticeships and traineeships will continue to play a key role in Australia’s economic recovery, this initiative is a welcome relief for GTOs, host employers and apprentices to ensure the same level of wage assistance as other employees, and to help keep apprentices connected to their employers.

This change will apply retrospectively to wages paid from 1 April 2020 and will be rolled out in line with existing processes for the apprenticeship wage subsidy, with payments made quarterly in arrears.

The guidelines are yet to be formulated, however the Federal Government will consult with key stakeholders from the group training sector and the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network.

For more information you can visit Government's information on Supporting Apprentices and Trainees or contact your Group Training Organisation to discuss further. It is our understanding that final claims for payment must be lodged by 31 December 2020.
