WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

An Australian Apprenticeship (commonly known as an apprenticeship or traineeship) is a great learning choice for your son or daughter, as they’ll be able to mix paid work with on-the-job training while they complete a nationally-recognised qualification.

Apprentices and trainees finish their higher-learning journeys equipped with the practical skills and the formal education required for successful careers. This powerful combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience is highly regarded by employers across many industries and professions.

There are more than 500 occupations (Click here for some insight!) across Australia that offer apprenticeships and traineeships ranging from Certificate II to Advanced Diploma levels, including traditional trades and a number of emerging occupations in most sectors of business and industry.

Your son or daughter can undertake an Australian Apprenticeship if they are a school leaver, re-entering the workforce, or as an adult worker simply wishing to change careers. They can even begin an Australian Apprenticeship while finishing secondary school.

The Australian Government even provides funding to eligible Australian Apprentices aimed to assist with the costs incurred whist they are undertaking training.

How do they work?

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a structured training arrangement of usually 3.5 or 4 years duration. To begin an apprenticeship your son or daughter will need to find a job with an employer. The training combines practical experience at work under the instruction of a suitable employer, with off-the-job training provided by a Registered Training Organisation.

On successful completion they are issued with a nationally-recognised qualification and on-the-job skills that employers value. This typically results in a full time position in the a career they love.

Traineeships

A traineeship is a training agreement between the trainee and their respective employer whereby the employer agrees to train the trainee in a specific industry, and the trainee agrees to work and learn.

Traineeships are available for people of all ages and usually can last between 9 to 48 months, depending on the vocation and certificate level undertaken.
