Apprenticeship wage subsidy boost

Apprenticeship Program extended with $1.5bn boost

The recent announcement from the Morrison Government bears some much needed good news for job-seekers and employers alike.

Whilst the new JobTrainer program will provide training or re-skilling for up to 340,700 school leavers and job seekers, the Government has also announced further support for existing apprentices and trainees with an additional boost of funding.

This follows and is in addition to the $1.3 billion program announced in March. The eligibility criteria will be widened from small businesses to medium-sized businesses with 199 or fewer employees. The subsidised apprentices will have had to be placed by July 1 2020.

What else you need to know:
  • The subsidy covers half of the apprentices' wages, up to $7,000 a quarter.
  • The subsidy will now be extended by six months through to the end of March 2021.
  • Employers of any size and Group Training Organisations that re-engage an out-of-trade apprentice are also eligible.
  • While the wage subsidy is not available to apprentices and trainees receiving JobKeeper for the same period, where businesses cease receiving JobKeeper they will be eligible to apply if they had an apprentice or trainee engaged by July 1 2020.

The apprentice and trainee subsidy currently supports 47,000 employers with 81,000 apprentices and trainees – the expansion is expected to take this to nearly 90,000 businesses and 180,000 apprentices.
