The new Australian wage subsidy has launched on January 1 2019. Available spots have already been taken up in most states, however it’s still worthwhile applying to assess whether there’s availability in your region.
Under the new trial program, employers who sign-up and commence a new apprentice from January 1 will be eligible to receive subsidies for that apprentice’s first three years of work. If deemed eligible, employers will be subsidised 75 percent of the first year award wage for the new apprentice, 50 percent for the second year, and 25 per cent for the third.
The Wage Subsidy is really exciting news for young job seekers and businesses across regional Australia and will be instrumental in creating meaningful job opportunities for young people that will help to skill the regional workforce for the future.
The trial will support 1,630 apprentice sign-ups in total, based on a rural and regional distribution per State or Territory.
In order to be eligible, employers must employ and register an apprentice in a full-time Certificate III or Certificate IV course that leads to an occupation listed on the National Skills Needs List, and meet all other eligibility requirements under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program. ASA can help employers to determine whether they’re eligible for the subsidy and what they need to do to secure their spot
