Caitlyn decided that university wasn’t an option and started working in retail, but quickly learned the retail industry was not the best fit for her. She came across an apprenticeship opportunity on a job-seeking website and applied. Shortly after, she started a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology with Komatsu Australia Pty Ltd.

Caitlyn was fortunate to receive a lot of support throughout her apprenticeship journey. She explains: “Komatsu has constantly supported me through my apprenticeship by allowing flexibility in the roster to complete work evidence, mentoring throughout my apprenticeship, and continual training, I am very grateful for everything they provided.”

Caitlyn completed her certificate early and was nominated for regional and national 4th Year Apprentice of the Year for NSW and Komatsu Australia. Finally, she bore the fruit of her hard and good labour and won the Southern and Western Sydney Region Apprentice of the Year Award at the NSW Training Awards on 30th June 2023.

Today, she is putting into practice her skills as a Plant Technician in the remarketing division and goes on now to compete at a state level. Her day-to-day work in this role consists of servicing, maintaining, and repairing heavy earthmoving equipment and leading teams in the remarketing division.

Apprenticeship Support Australia proudly supports Caitlyn and other women in male-dominated trades through its Women in Non-Traditional Trades Mentoring program to ensure they complete their trades and are supported to take the next step in their careers.
