A bespoke online test that determines the "work-readiness" of young job-seekers is part of a game-changing plan to increase Australian apprentice engagement and completion rates.

The test also gives candidates rankings on their suitability for up to five, specific, job-types.

"The ‘Job-Fit’ test is part of a front-end approach to apprentice recruitment that focuses on assessing the aptitude and suitability of potential apprentices before they commit to an apprenticeship contract," says ASA Managing Director, Darren Cocks.

"The test, which can be accessed on ASA’s careers website Skillsroad.com.au gives users feedback on areas in which they can improve, as well as tip sheets and other resources they can use to achieve better results if they are determined to follow a certain pathway.

"However, the onus is not just on apprentices, we also have a "RecruitReady" diagnostic on apprenticeshipsupport.com.au to help employers spotlight areas in their businesses that are failing to attract, engage and retain talent.

"This test comes with practical tools and downloadable guides to help businesses improve their recruitment, induction and performance management practices before they take on an apprentice."

Both tests, designed by experts in organisational psychology and recruitment, have been developed in response to the Federal Government’s upheaval of the apprenticeship support program, aimed at improving sliding apprentice starting and completion rates.

"A job is a passport to a better life and securing a spot on the job ladder is getting harder, but we need to ensure young people aren’t being churned through training that doesn’t lead to jobs because they’ve made poorly informed choices," Mr Cocks says.

"We also want to help businesses avoid the mistake of recruiting apprentices without having the correct mechanisms in place to ensure they can truly shine and grow in their business.

"These online diagnostics are an accessible way to help bridge the gaps preventing the successful completion of apprenticeships in Australia."

Apprenticeship Support Australia is a newly-created national company, powered by NSW Business Chamber, Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia and Business SA, chosen to deliver the Australian Government’s Australian Apprenticeship Support Network program across Australia from July 1, 2015.
