The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry today welcomes the announcement of a focused taskforce to review barriers and opportunities to the uptake of apprenticeships and traineeships in Victoria.
The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a part of the taskforce, which will investigate issues, seek specific experiences of individual apprentices, employers and training providers and determine actions that could be put in place to address the issues raised.
Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Acting Chief Executive Bryce Prosser today said
this taskforce was needed as apprenticeships and traineeships develop and maintain a skilled
workforce, which is vital to the Victorian economy.
“We are pleased to be a part of this taskforce and look forward to contributing and sharing the Victorian Chamber’s experience backing Apprenticeships Support Australia, which has assisted more than 70,000 businesses to sign up more than 200,000 apprentices and trainees,” he said.
“Between December 2012 and December 2015, the number of apprenticeship and trainee
commencements fell more than 52 per cent. This is a concern because skilled workers are essential in many industries and apprenticeships and traineeships are a pathway to this.”
The Victorian Chamber believes that young people should have several options available to them after leaving school, and apprenticeships and traineeships are a valuable pathway to a fulfilling career.
