The new BAC subsidy will give businesses the certainty they need to invest in new staff during these difficult economic times.
The Federal Government’s recently announced $1.2 billion Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements (BAC) wage scheme makes the perfect time to add apprentices and trainees to your talent mix. The new subsidy will give businesses the certainty they need to invest in new staff during these difficult economic times.
Here are three reasons why employing apprentices and trainees makes both financial and practical sense.
- You will save costs
Yes, the Federal Government’s announcement of the BAC wage scheme is a welcome relief to many businesses impacted by the pandemic. But skilling apprentices and trainees to be a good fit for your company and address your unique needs will also improve retention rates, productivity, and job satisfaction – all good for your bottom line.
Owner Rod Marchant-Smith from Peninsula Air Conditioning, welcomed the announcement of the new subsidy. “Apprentices are imperative to our business for several reasons, firstly to maintain a high skill level and secondly to support growth”.
Like many other businesses, Peninsula Air Conditioning has been in survival mode. However, ”we can proudly say due to the resources available to us we have retained 100% of our staff to date”, says Marchant-Smith.
- You’ll future proof your talent strategy
Building resilience and flexibility into your business strategy is crucial for future success. Apprentices and trainees who learn the ropes while on the job are more likely to have the skills and attributes you need to develop your business.
Marchant-Smith certainly understands the importance of succession planning. “Given the pandemic, we have all found ourselves re-navigating how to do business. I feel very strongly about retaining and nurturing our apprentices and trainees as are they are both the foundation and future of our workforce. They will be major contributors to restoring Australia's economy back to good health. We need to continue to train and upskill apprentices as they are the seeds to becoming future business owners and employers”.
- You will become more innovative and resilient
Building a diverse workplace in terms of skills, age, gender, cultural backgrounds and viewpoints will give your business an edge when it comes to innovation and productivity.
With the subsidy available from 5th
October, the team at Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) expect to see more employers bringing forward their recruitment plans and starting to look for motivated young apprentices and trainees. We will support you every step of the way and show you why apprenticeships are the key to your future business success.
Chris, a third year apprentice with Peninsula Air Conditioning, comments "I feel so lucky to still be working as so many of my mates haven't worked in months. The inclusions in this year’s budget could provide stability to the apprentices who have remained gainfully employed and provide a bit of hope to the unemployed apprentices actively seeking to return to the workforce".
