HSC students: apprenticeships offer better job outcomes!

NSW students receiving their HSC results today (December 15) should consider apprenticeships and traineeships to kick-start their careers, says Apprenticeship Support Australia’s National General Manager, James Moran.

Young people, their parents and, in many cases, their teachers at school are not aware of the outstanding job outcomes an apprenticeship or traineeship can lead to.

In 2015, the Australian Jobs Report outlined that 85.5% of apprentices are in full-time employment six months after completing their training, versus only 68% of university graduates.

“That means you’re almost 20% more likely to end up with a full time job at the end” Mr Moran said.

There are more than 700 apprenticeships and traineeships available across almost every industry and areas like construction are booming, as are emerging new technology related disciplines.

Employers are screaming out for skilled workers, especially in those trades relating to construction, but at the same time our youth unemployment rate continues to soar.

The October 2016 ABS Labour Force Survey reported a state average of 11.5% in NSW, but figures over 20% in some areas including the Mid North Coast, Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven.

“Completing an apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way for school leavers to gain a nationally recognised qualification and set themselves up for a stable and successful career” Mr Moran said.

“Employers greatly value experience and what better way to get it than to work directly in your field whilst you study.  You not only get a qualification but learn to practice it on-the-job!”

“I strongly recommend today’s HSC graduates explore all their options, and careers website Skillsroad.com.au is a great place to start. Students can take a free test to discover more about which careers might be right for them and learn about the wide range of training opportunities available, in addition to the obvious pathway at university.”
