Queensland’s NRL stars Aidan Guerra and Dylan Napa are fronting a new television and social media campaign aimed at boosting the uptake of apprenticeships and traineeships across Queensland.

Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) is addressing the state’s youth unemployment rate by offering young people meaningful employment and careers.

Queensland’s youth unemployment rate of 13.6% is higher than the national average; in some parts of the state it soars to 53.9%.

“I wanted to be part of this campaign because I come from a family of successful tradies, so I’ve seen first-hand how a career in trades can set you up for life,” says Aidan Guerra.

“It’s also important that job-seekers and employers know that apprenticeships and traineeships are not just for ‘tradies,’ they offer successful careers in a multitude of other fields like retail and community services,” says Guerra.

“For me, doing an apprenticeship is on the cards after footy” says Guerra.

Apprenticeship Support Australia has one of the highest rates of completion for vocational education at 80.2%. This is significantly higher than the national average of 58.3% across other apprenticeship programs.

This success is attributed in part to ASA’s Skillsroad program which aims to give career advice to young people to help them get into the right career for them. ASA also provides a mentoring service and runs regular workshops to assist employers with strategies for best practice induction and coaching.
