What is a Group Training Organisation?

An alternative way to host an apprentice or trainee

There are two ways to host an apprentice or trainee in your business. The first is to directly hire them and the alternative is to host them through what’s known as a ‘Group Training Organisation’.

What is a Group Training Organisation?

A Group Training Organisation (GTO) is a business that employs apprentices and trainees and then places them with host employers. The GTO will manage payroll, superannuation, leave and entitlements for the apprentice while you supervise and train them. They also organise the formal part of the training with the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) allowing you to focus on running your business.

GTO’s offer support to apprentices, trainees, and host employers throughout the duration of the training contract. They help all parties navigate the process end-to-end and provide additional coaching and mentoring.

What are the benefits to the employer in using a GTO?

The GTO will manage all aspects of the formal training component of the apprenticeship or traineeship and provide coaching and mentoring throughout. With this additional support, GTO’s typically see higher completion rates.

Taking on an apprentice through the GTO model provides flexibility for employers who may not be able to commit to the full duration of an apprenticeship or traineeship but still want to contribute to the skills development of our future workforce.

Upon completion of the training, the employer can take the graduating apprentice or trainee directly into their business as an employee.
