Investment in training leads to Victorian employer of the year

McDonald’s Australia has been recognised for its achievements in employee development by being awarded Employer of the Year at the Victorian Training Awards in August 2015.

Training and career development is a core part of the organisation’s business structure, with programs offered to people at all levels of the business. At McDonald’s, staff training is seen as an investment and the organisation encourages other businesses to do the same.

Apprenticeship Support Australia supports McDonald’s in their outstanding training practices and had the pleasure of identifying some key points to their success with Kellie Lumsden, RTO Manager for South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria:

  • Engage and motivate employees at all levels, be clear and open about individual successes and failures.
  • Integrate diversity into the everyday running of the business rather than focussing on separate programs and celebrate milestones and achievements.
  • Provide multiple education pathways to suit each individual’s goals and ambitions and nurture partnerships with stakeholders who share your values and embrace your vision.
  • Power of the brand includes embracing the responsibility as an employer of youth, and give them the skills to enter the larger employment pool when the time comes. Embrace the ultimate outcome that you are a stepping stone to their dreams.
  • Support the broader VET industry with a transparent traineeship and education program. Value organisations working towards unemployed needs and encourage school-based apprenticeships.

Apprenticeship Support Australia has a solid partnership with McDonald’s Australia, servicing both company-owned and licensee stores across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

Kristian McCarthy, General Manager Apprenticeship Support Australia - Victoria says: “We recognise McDonalds’ strong vocational training enthusiasm and success, and are proud to be identified as a valued partner, embracing their vision optimistically though all levels of our organisation.”

The success of McDonald’s at this year’s Victorian Training Awards will continue, having recently been nominated as a finalist for Employer of the Year at the Australian Training Awards to be held in Hobart this coming November, the organisation is aiming to inspire the youth employer industry and those organisations striving to become a leader in the VET employer sector.

We congratulate McDonalds’ achievements and appreciate their special mention as a valued partner along side University of Melbourne and The SBAT Sunshine College Program.
