Victoria launches Australian-first hydrogen vehicle training program

The Victorian Government has announced a new accredited training course to equip automotive technicians with the skills required to safely service and maintain hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The program is the first of its kind in Australia and is being delivered through the Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence.

This initiative brings together industry, TAFEs, and dual-sector universities to co-design and pilot short courses and on-the-job training to address skills gaps in priority sectors.

The hydrogen vehicle training course was co-designed by Kangan Institute and Foton Mobility Distribution.
It focuses on hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy vehicles, which use hydrogen to power an electric motor and emit only water vapour.

These vehicles are increasingly seen as a key solution for decarbonising Australia’s long-haul freight sector.
Victoria currently has more than 27,000 automotive technicians. The new training program is expected to scale up to meet growing demand in the emerging hydrogen vehicle market.

Victoria has three renewable hydrogen refuelling stations in operation, including the only publicly accessible station in Australia.

The course is supported by the Victorian Government’s Skills Solutions Partnerships program.

Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney said: “We are investing in skills and training to build the pipeline of workers that Victoria needs. This training course is the first of its kind in Australia. It’s great for jobs and great for the economy.”

Apprenticeship Support Australia is well-positioned to assist employers and apprentices engaging with this new training pathway, offering expert guidance on apprenticeship management, funding eligibility and workforce development planning.
