$10 million investment to boost SA’s skills workforce

South Australia’s VET sector has received a $10 million funding boost aimed at expanding and strengthening its educator workforce.

The joint investment, split evenly between the State and Federal Governments, is designed to address critical skills shortages by increasing the number of qualified trainers and enhancing professional development opportunities.

The funding supports a range of initiatives to grow the VET workforce by more than 300 educators and provide upskilling opportunities for over 500 participants.

Key measures include:

  • Scholarships for aspiring and current educators
  • Programs to upgrade educator qualifications
  • Streamlined pathways for industry professionals to transition into teaching roles
  • Support for educators to engage in sector-based research
  • Mentoring for new and early-career educators
  • Assistance for experienced educators to pursue higher-level qualifications and mentor others

One such initiative, a $408,000 pilot program, fast-tracks eight industry professionals into educator roles at TAFE SA’s Future Industries and Trade faculty. The 12-week program focuses on filling vacancies in high-demand areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and community services.

Minister for Education, Training and Skills, Blair Boyer said: “There is a critical need for skilled workers right across the country so we must support educators to continue seeing growth in students undertaking the courses we need skilled workers in.

“This injection of funding will give educators the support they need to continue their great work, as well as additional support to expand their qualifications and become better educators.”
