First Training Hotspot a great success

On Wednesday 14th September Apprenticeship Support Australia’s proudly hosted its inaugural Training Hotspot event in Perth, Western Australia.

With a specific focus on the Tourism and Hospitality industry, employers and training organisations heard firsthand from industry experts about the training opportunities available within their sector. Guests were provided tips on how to best utilise training in order to take full advantage of the predicted future growth in tourism and its supporting industries.

The highlight of the event was the exciting panel discussion featuring Marco Bijl, Chef de Cuisine at Crown Perth’s Atrium restaurant, Sophie Budds, owner of Tastebudds Cooking Studio and former apprentice with Rick Stein, and small business owners of Higher Grounds Coffee – an excting new startup, Freddy and Peter Parsons.

Apprenticeship Support Australia WA Manager, Lena Constantine, said that the Training Hotspot employer panel offered guests the opportunity to hear how similar businesses were utilising training to grow their business.

“Hearing the perspectives of very different businesses within the tourism and hospitality industry allowed guests to have a better understanding of current industry trends, growth strategies and how to successfully implement training,” said Constantine.

The presenters enabled attendees to gain an insight into the growth of the tourism and hospitality industry and how important developing a skilled workforce is to enabling success.

CCI’s Principal Economist Paula Gadsby provided attendees with an overview of the economic outlook for the tourism and hospitality sectors in WA, citing the completion of major infrastructure projects and exciting event initiatives in WA as a boost to the sector, giving rise to a greater need for hotel accommodation and diverse new culinary and tourism experiences.

In light of the growth forecast in these sectors, subsequent presenters discussed the variety of training qualifications and opportunities available, and the ways in which these can be accessed and utilised. Apprenticeship Support Australia can provide assistance to businesses to implement their training and development strategies.

The event concluded with a networking session providing business owners the opportunity to connect with training organisations and Apprenticeship Support Australia representatives alike.

Apprenticeship Support Australia is grateful to the panel guests and training organisations for making themselves available to attend, and also to CCI for hosting the event. Training Hotspot events are set to become a regular on the Apprenticeship Support Australia calendar, highlighting the training opportunities available across a few of WA’s other growth industries.
