Nearly 100 employers came together at a forum hosted by Apprenticeship Support Australia, to discuss the five generations working side-by-side in the workplace and strategies to bridge the generation gap. With apprentice completion rates still only hovering at 54%, it’s critical for businesses to engage and retain their young talent.
Coaching psychology expert, Susie Burrell, who headlined the event said, “Research highlights that apprentices and trainees are most likely to leave their jobs due to problems with their experience in the workplace, specifically around communication. Failing to accept the differences in the generations and implementing strategies to meet Gen-Z in the middle could cost businesses dearly.”
Some of the strategies discussed included the implementation of regular career discussions to highlight pathways for the employee to keep them motivated, setting employees up for success with clear guidelines and expectations and mentorship through peer buddy systems.
Zali Moore, a first-year electrotechnology apprentice with Endeavour Energy spoke on the panel on behalf of Gen-Z. She credited her employer for creating a peer buddy system that smoothed the path and provided a source of support during her first year.
ASA NSW South Manager, Tony Keir, said “We know that employers with the highest completion rates tend to be larger employers, who are experienced in employing and mentoring apprentices and trainees. These organisations typically have great Human Resources capability, so these events and our programs are all about helping other employers who don’t have access to such expertise, with simple, low-cost strategies to cultivate positive relationships with the next generation of young people entering their workforce.”
"The workplace is changing and despite some of the stereotypical traits of Gen-Z, they can be an asset to businesses when it comes to innovation, technology and moving a business forward. Many employers just need to discover how to work with and get the most from their youngest generations" Ms Burrell said.
