Learning with purpose: Mature-age study brought new motivation

Paul Holmes swapped fitness for a trade to better support his family.

A bold career change

At 31, Tamworth local Paul Holmes took a chance many would hesitate to take. After years working as a personal trainer and gym manager, he decided to start again from the ground up and take on a trade. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one.

“I loved what I was doing,” Paul said. “But the hours just didn’t work for my family. I was up at 3am, home for a bit, then back out until 8pm. I was missing time with my kids, and I needed something more sustainable long term.”

Paul began searching for a long-term career where he could provide for his family and still be present for them. A close friend had been encouraging him for years to consider an apprenticeship with Chill-Rite Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. “He supported his family through it, he really loved the work, and I could see it was something that would suit me too. I just wish I’d done it sooner.”

A start of something new

In July 2024, Paul officially began his apprenticeship in air conditioning and refrigeration. As a mature-age apprentice, the transition was eye-opening.

“There’s something different about learning when you’re older. I left school in Year 11 and never saw myself going to uni, but being back in a TAFE classroom now, I really value it. You understand how important it is to apply yourself.”

He’s currently completing his Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration and enjoys the variety the trade brings. “It’s not just one thing. You’re working with plumbing, electrical, refrigerants, building materials, and plasterwork. It feels like five trades in one, and every day is different.

Advice for others considering a trade

Reflecting on his journey, Paul encourages others, especially adults thinking of a career change, to take the leap. “I’ve had more jobs than most people. I was looking for something I could do for the rest of my life. This trade gives me that. Robots and AI can’t do what I do, and no matter what happens, I’ll always have something to support my family with.”

He’s upfront about the challenges, particularly the financial pressure of starting over. “Financially, the first year or two can be tough. But if you stick it out, you’ll be in a great position. Once you’re signed off, you’re set up for the long run.”

For young people choosing between uni and a trade, his advice is clear: “Try a trade. You can go to uni later if you want. But a trade gives you skills you can use right now. I thought I’d be running sales seminars or motivational speaking. Then I thought personal training was the path.

Eventually, I realised I wanted to help people in a more practical way, and this trade gave me that.”
