Catherine’s career began with a traineeship at Hobart City Council, followed by two years as Office Manager at Derwent Park Plumbing Supplies. She then spent seven years managing operations at a fish oil factory before moving into hospitality as Office Manager and Keno operator.
Her career took a new direction in customer service, starting on the phones in various departments before becoming a facilitator at Vodafone’s Hobart call centre for 16 years. Catherine then transitioned into vocational education as a facilitator and assessor for seven years. Today, she uses her extensive experience as a field mentor with Apprenticeship Support Australia.
Catherine’s inspiration has always come from helping people grow and succeed.
“Early in my career, I learned the value of support and guidance in building confidence and skills. When I moved into facilitation and assessment, I saw firsthand how training could transform someone’s life.
“In this role as a field mentor, my inspiration is seeing apprentices overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Knowing that I can play a part in their journey – whether by guiding them through situations, helping them access resources, or simply being someone they can rely on – motivates me every day.”
Catherine has a broad range of qualifications, including a Certificate III and IV in Business, Certificate III in Retail, Certificate IV in Project Management, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Gaming and Keno Licence, Mental Health training and further Short courses in communication, wellbeing, cyber security, and WHS.
“My career journey and life experience have given me a deep understanding of people, processes, and the importance of adaptability. Each role taught me resilience, communication, and problem-solving skills,” she says.
“Moving into facilitation and assessment was a turning point because I saw how education and support could transform lives.
“These qualifications allow me to provide holistic support and approach challenges with empathy and practical solutions.”
For Catherine, the most enjoyable aspect of her role is the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life.
“Every day, I support trainees and apprentices through personal or work-related challenges, celebrate their wins, and help them access resources to succeed.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see their confidence grow and know I’ve played a part in their journey. I love the variety and connection this role brings – working with people from different backgrounds, understanding their goals, and tailoring support to suit their needs.
“Sometimes it’s just listening and letting them know I’m here whenever they need someone to talk to. Ultimately, it’s the human element – the conversations, trust, and positive impact – that I love most.”
