Modernising Apprenticeships Report highlights key priorities for Tasmania

Tasmanian State Government report examines current practices to keep pace with a changing workforce.

Last year the Tasmanian State Government prepared the Modernising Apprenticeships Report, examining current practices and challenges in the apprenticeship and traineeship system in Tasmania to ensure they remain relevant in a changing labour market.

The consultation process gathered input from learners, training organisations, employers and industry representatives.

Key recommendations from the report included:

  • Mentoring: Build mentoring capacity by leveraging existing best practices to support apprentices, trainees and employers.
  • Support for Small Businesses: Develop mentoring programs tailored for small businesses to aid in retention and completion of apprenticeships.
  • Career Awareness: Collaborate on career awareness strategies with relevant stakeholders to attract individuals to various industries.
  • Work Readiness: Address work readiness challenges by collaborating with educational and employment services to better prepare candidates.
  • Mental Health Support: Continue promoting mental health support in the workplace for apprentices and trainees.
  • Simplify the System: Refine and simplify information related to the VET sector and Tasmanian training system to make it more accessible.
  • Industry Partnership: Increase co-design and delivery of training with industry partners to enhance training relevance and quality.
  • Funding Models: Review and streamline funding models to ensure accessibility and knowledge of programs for skill sets.

Apprenticeship Support Australia looks forward to collaborating with Skills Tasmania and the Department for Education, Children and Young People to achieve high-quality and supportive apprenticeship support services.
