Port Augusta Technical College opens to boost SA workforce

The newly built Port Augusta Technical College has officially opened its doors, marking a major milestone for education and workforce development in regional South Australia.

With over 200 students already enrolled, the state-of-the-art facility is at full capacity and poised to deliver hands-on training aligned with local industry needs.

Developed in partnership with major employers, the college offers tailored programs to ensure students graduate job-ready.

The college features five purpose-built facilities, including:

  • Four industry workshops: covering hospitality, health and social support, and trades in construction, civil, resources, and infrastructure.
  • Advanced tech spaces: CAD suite, 3D printing, virtual reality co-creation space, and two learning labs.
  • Outdoor learning area and short-stay accommodation for up to 44 students from remote areas.

Year 12 students can begin apprenticeships or university degrees while completing their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), giving them a head start in their careers.

Training programs target high-demand sectors:

  • Civil, resources and infrastructure: plant operators, concreters
  • Cookery and tourism: chefs, cooks, tourism operators
  • Health and social support: allied health, nursing
  • Multi-trades: electricians, plumbers, boilermakers.

The college is the second of five being launched under the $208.8 million South Australian Government initiative to integrate vocational education into secondary schooling. It supports the Upper Spencer Gulf Workforce Strategy, helping build a skilled workforce in a region vital to South Australia’s economic future.
