Time to revisit tradition of on-the-job training

“A recent survey by NSW Business Chamber found that one in five businesses are struggling to source suitably qualified staff. NSW, and indeed Australia, is experiencing a skills shortage across a range of critical vocations,” Apprenticeship Support Australia NSW General Manager, Andrew Williams, said today.

“Meanwhile, fewer businesses are offering young Australians apprenticeships and traineeships, with commencements falling by nearly 20 per cent in the last year, yet youth unemployment is escalating.

“The business case is clear – we need to revisit the tradition of on-the-job training combined with off-site learning as a means of building the skilled talent pool this country needs in order to remain fiscally competitive. “

The Australian Government, under its revamped Apprenticeship Support Network, is offering a raft of support mechanisms to make the process of recruiting, training and retaining apprentices easier than ever before. There are Federal incentives for eligible employers, as well as for qualifying apprentices and trainees.

“We are pleased to see the NSW Government has now broadened the range of qualifications eligible for State subsidies under its Smart and Skilled reform package to make training affordable, especially in critical vocations,” Andrew says.

“If your business is struggling to source qualified staff, NSW Business Chamber’s apprenticeship and traineeship specialists, Apprenticeship Support Australia, can show you how apprenticeships and traineeships could be the solution. Apprenticeship Support Australia offers a complete end-to-end apprenticeship service, including ongoing mentoring and support throughout the training contract – all at no cost to you.

“NSW Business Chamber is passionate about helping business develop a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce to support future economic growth.  Hear more from NSW Business Chamber CEO, Stephen Cartwright, about what your business can do to lead the way by utilising the Australian Apprenticeships program,” Andrew concluded.
