For eight years, one local school has been quietly revolutionising its approach to education, offering a unique hospitality traineeship program that’s proving to be a successful alternative to the traditional ATAR pathway.
“This traineeship offers a hands-on, student-centred approach to learning, opening doors to a vibrant and dynamic industry.” explains Carleen, John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School’s Manager of Catering and Hospitality Services.
The traineeship is offered to the School’s Years 11 and 12 students, providing them with a valuable head start in the hospitality industry. With opportunities come challenges, the program has also faced its share of challenges.
“Securing suitable training facilities and managing student numbers for each shift have been key considerations,” Carleen explains. “We’ve also focused on supporting students in completing their written work and ensuring they graduate from the program within the targeted two-year timeframe.”
The evidence of the program’s success lies in the impressive employment outcomes of its graduates. “We’ve seen our students go on to work at prestigious establishments such as the Ritz Carlton and the Hyatt (when it was open),” Carleen proudly shares. These success stories demonstrate the program’s ability to equip students with the skills and experience necessary to thrive in the competitive hospitality industry. This unique traineeship is not just about serving meals; it’s about creating opportunities for students, one at a time.
