What is the Tasmanian Skills Plan?

The Tasmanian Skills Plan 2024-2028 is a comprehensive strategy to shape the future of Tasmania's workforce .

Currently in force, the Skills Plan was released in late 2024 and sets out the strategic direction for Tasmania’s training and workforce development system and informs Tasmanian Government funding priorities until 2028.

It outlines how to grow Tasmania’s future workforce through investment in vocational education and training (VET) and complementary activities to meet skills and workforce needs.

The Skills Plan outlines three themes and the key actions for each. These are:

Skills for Jobs

This theme focuses on aligning training with current and future workforce needs, particularly in high-demand sectors. Key actions:

  • 1.1 Invest in training aligned with industry and government priorities through programs like Building a Skilled Workforce and Apprentice and Trainee Training.
  • 1.2 Strengthen partnerships with industry via Industry Skills Compacts and provide workforce planning tools and data dashboards.
  • 1.3 Enhance apprenticeships and traineeships, promoting earn-while-you-learn models and supporting learners through economic fluctuations.
  • 1.4 Attract international students and skilled migrants, and support their work-readiness and integration.
  • 1.5 Increase women’s participation in VET, especially in non-traditional, higher-paying roles.
  • 1.6 Prioritise training in the health and care sectors, including digital upskilling and infrastructure like TasTAFE’s Health Hub.
  • 1.7 Develop a renewable energy training centre on the North West Coast to meet growing energy sector demands.
  • 1.8 Expand construction training through initiatives like the High-Vis Army and Earthworks Academy to meet infrastructure needs.

Supporting Learners to Succeed

This theme aims to make training more inclusive, accessible, and supportive for diverse learners. Key actions:

  • Deliver wrap-around services like foundation skills training, culturally competent support for Aboriginal learners, and work-readiness programs.
  • Fund place-based training in rural and regional areas using modern technologies like virtual and mixed-reality tools.
  • Support employers with resources on diversity, inclusion, supervision, and mental health to build strong, supportive workplaces.

Building a Stronger, More Connected System

This theme promotes collaboration across the training ecosystem to improve learner and industry outcomes. Key Actions:

  • Strengthen the VET workforce through professional development, industry engagement, and longer funding agreements.
  • Encourage innovation in training delivery and investment in modern equipment.
  • Support both public and private training providers with flexible, transparent funding and quality improvement incentives.
  • Build capacity in Aboriginal Community Controlled RTOs to deliver culturally relevant training.
  • Enhance VET data systems for better decision-making, cyber security, and learner feedback integration.
  • Promote VET through awards and campaigns that celebrate success and raise awareness of vocational pathways.

How we can help

Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) service is contracted by the Australian Government to aid apprentices, trainees and employers with a range of support services in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. These include:

  • Signing up apprentices and facilitating the national training contract
  • Mentoring apprentices to help them to completion
  • Mentoring employer to help them build their capability and capacity to retain and complete apprentice
  • Assess and administer the Apprenticeship Incentive program/system, as well as troubleshooting assistant to get access to the government claiming system
  • Specialised and enhanced services for women entering into a male-dominated trade
  • Career advice for job seekers.
