Apprentice spotlight: Ryan's route from school to supply chain

For many students, the transition from school to the workforce can feel uncertain. For Ryan Bigmore, that transition is being supported by a school-based traineeship through the Head Start program.

Partnering with Murray Mallee Training Company and host employer Reece Plumbing Group (Ocean Grove), Ryan is gaining valuable, hands-on experience while continuing his studies. It’s a practical pathway that allows him to build real skills in a workplace well before completing school.

A clear pathway forward

Ryan approached the opportunity with enthusiasm and a goal to build a career in the supply chain industry.

With a strong willingness to learn and a hands-on mindset, he has made the most of early work experience and is now taking the next step through a nationally recognised qualification.

School-based traineeships like this allow students to combine learning with practical experience, developing industry-specific skills while earning and gaining exposure to the workplace.

Backed by industry support

Through this traineeship, Ryan is supported by a strong network. His group training organisation manages his placement, while his host employer provides on-the-job experience in a supportive environment.

At the same time, Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) is working alongside both Ryan and his employer to support the journey, from sign-up through to completion.

ASA provides end-to-end assistance, including:

  • Facilitating training contracts
  • Supporting access to financial incentives
  • Providing ongoing mentoring for both apprentices and employers.

This structured support helps ensure apprentices and trainees stay on track, while employers are equipped to build and retain skilled staff.

Turning ambition into action

Ryan’s story highlights the value of early career pathways that connect education with industry. By combining school, formal training and workplace experience, he is building a strong foundation for future success.

It’s also a clear example of how programs like Head Start, and the support provided by ASA, create genuine opportunities for students to move confidently from the classroom into meaningful employment.
