Hiring an apprentice or trainee

Starting an apprenticeship
Learn the meaning of apprenticeships, the difference between an apprenticeship and traineeship and how to get started. Build skills and earn while you learn.
The scheme offers businesses employing less than 200 staff that have hired an unemployed person aged 18-24 years within the last three months the chance to apply for up to $7500 to pay for job-specific training to upskill staff.
Businesses that employ apprentices can also apply for the “Training for Employment Scholarships” for training to extend their apprentices’ job skills.
The Scholarship funding can be used to pay for accredited courses (Certificate I or II), non-accredited training, such as seminars, licences and tickets required for working in specific industries, as well as for training to improve foundation skills in areas such as literacy, numeracy, writing or information technology.
“Training for Employment Scholarships” are available under the Youth Stream of the Australian Government’s $664 million Industry Skills Fund.
