From passion to profession: Turning a love of cars into a rewarding career

Wesley’s journey shows how structured support and hands-on experience can turn a passion into a lifelong career.

Wesley Dare-McCombe always loved cars, but it took time for him to realise that his passion could lead to a successful and rewarding career. After exploring other career options, he kept coming back to the automotive industry. With the help of group training organisation WPC Group, Wes secured a job as an apprentice Automotive Electrical Technician.

Meet Wes: An apprentice story from all angles

Building skills with the right support

Like many young people entering the workforce, Wes needed guidance to develop his skills and navigate the demands of the automotive industry. With mentorship from his trainer David and regular check-ins from Emily at WPC Group, he is learning new skills every day, gaining confidence and has set clear career goals.

"Honestly, half these goals I probably wouldn’t have set without someone like Dave here in the shop to see my potential and guide me in the right direction," Wesley says.

Apprenticeship Support Australia played a key role in Wes’ success by handling the administrative processes that come with an apprenticeship for both Wes and Automall Aspley. Apprenticeship Support Australia assisted with government incentive applications, provided Wes with ongoing support to help him stay on track and assisted Automall Aspley with tools and resources to help Wes succeed.

Now well into his apprenticeship, Wes is excelling in his role and embracing the future of the automotive industry with the shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles.

Stronger apprentices, stronger workforce

Wes’ journey highlights the impact of structured support on apprentice success rates. Employers like Automall Aspley, who boast an apprentice retention rate nearly double the industry average, demonstrate how investing in training benefits both apprentices, their business and the wider industry.
