Good News: Talent Retention Done Right

In the current talent market, many employers are facing talent retention challenges. However, Kerry Retimana, owner of Solid Building Solutions, is facing the opposite problem: he is receiving too many referrals.

In the current talent market, many employers are facing talent retention challenges. However, Kerry Retimana, owner of Solid Building Solutions, is facing the opposite problem: he is receiving too many referrals. Kerry's unique efforts and approach led to a popular and positive employer reputation.

Over the years, Kerry applied a lot of effort in developing various approaches to retention. He prioritises bonding activities outside of work, such as go-karting or paintball, and offers an occasional half-day work on Fridays while still paying for the whole day.

He sees this as a worthy investment that breaks down barriers and forms bonds in the workplace. This approach pays off in the long run, saving him time and money from constantly attracting, hiring and training. Bonding activities improve the atmosphere at work, which increases productivity. Given the skills shortage in the market, he firmly believes an employer should take the initiative with such actions to retain its talent.

Solid Building Solutions Pty Ltd currently has five apprentices, and Kerry wishes he could hire more; however, the ratio of trade worker-apprentice in the business needs to remain balanced. Tyler Coldwell, a third-year apprentice, has most recently joined the business. When asked what he thinks of his employer, Tyler said: "He is a great boss; nothing else needs to be said". Another apprentice, Mitchell Voigt, proudly shares: "I love it here, I wouldn't want it any other way".

"Thanks to Apprenticeship Support Australia, I don't have to worry about my apprentices going into TAFE, and they helped a great deal over the years".
