More work and jobs as the Melbourne metro tunnel project enters next phase

As one of 67 projects included in the Victorian State Government’s Major Project Skills Guarantee, works on the Metro Tunnel have so far employed 110 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets who have collectively worked 110,000 hours. This will have increased to 791 employment opportunities for young Victorians by the conclusion of the five-year project.

Under the Major Project Skills Guarantee, all of Victorian’s major publicly funded projects must use local apprentices, trainees or engineering cadets for at least 10 per cent of the project's total labour hours.

So far, more than 1200 young Victorians have been given a career kick start, clocking 1 million work hours completed across 52 projects.

Following the demolition of the three-storey car park beneath City Square and the removal of 5000 tonnes of debris, the next phase of the Metro Tunnel involves major piling works.

Progress on the Metro Tunnel will be visible through viewing windows on Swanston Street until 24-hour excavation and tunnelling works commence in early 2019.
