New wage support for QLD construction apprentices under state pilot program

A new QLD Government initiative, the Small Business Apprenticeship Pilot Program, is offering the first wave of 2,000 apprentices a major boost this year, to strengthen Queensland’s construction workforce.

The pilot will inject $19 million of support to small and family-owned construction businesses by subsidising apprentice wages while they attend off-site training.

The pilot program will reimburse:

  • 50% of the typical first or second-year apprentice wages while they attend training
  • 25% of the typical third or fourth-year apprentice wages while they attend training

To be eligible for the pilot:

  • your business must have 19 or fewer employees and have a maximum annual turnover of no more than $10 million
  • your apprentice must have commenced from 1 July 2025 and completed their probation period.

The pilot is available to 2,000 apprentices in eligible construction, plumbing, electrical and engineering trades while they attend up to 8 weeks of training a year.

The construction industry is the third-largest industry in the QLD, responsible for delivering housing, infrastructure, transport and key projects including the upcoming Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With small businesses facing rising costs and labour shortages, easing the financial burden of training apprentices helps build a more stable skills pipeline.

This pilot is part of a broader plan to improve apprenticeship outcomes and build long-term capacity in Queensland’s trade workforce.

As the first cohort of 2,000 apprentices ramps up under the scheme, the outcomes for both apprentices and employers will be closely monitored. The success of the pilot may shape how future trade training and wage assistance programs are structured in Queensland.

If you are a small or family-owned construction business or in Queensland, we encourage you to review the pilot program details and assess how this support could benefit you.
