“Australia’s youth unemployment rate is more than 12 per cent, and it’s even higher in certain parts of the country, yet concurrently we are facing a national skills crisis across a range of industries,” Mr Moran said.
"The completion of an apprenticeship or traineeship in one of the areas of need is a viable way for young people to gain a nationally recognised qualification and avoid joining the growing number of youth unemployed and underemployed."
There are more than 700 apprenticeships and traineeships available across a plethora of industries from administration, baking, childcare and agriculture to more traditional trades such as plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
Under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program, employers of Australian apprentices undertaking a Certificate III or IV qualification that leads to an occupation on the National Skills Needs List may be eligible for government incentives.
Mr Moran said students who didn’t achieve the marks they were hoping for should explore vocational education as an alternative pathway into university.
“Research tells us that high exam results do not necessarily translate into future success; it’s more important for young people to follow their passions,” Mr Moran said.
“I strongly recommend today’s high school graduates explore all their options, and if they think an apprenticeship or traineeship may be for them, to start hitting the phones and exploring their networks for contacts within their chosen industry who may be prepared to give them a go.”
