TAFE mentor wins Sydney TAFE Teacher of the Year 2016

Donna Colombini, who teaches at Sutherland College Gymea campus and Ultimo campus, was the recipient of the award in 2016.

Held on August 5, the awards recognised the academic, personal workplace and community achievements of graduates, teachers and alumni.

The new award won by Ms Colombini acknowledged the dedicated teachers who provided students with skills through their studies.

She has taught at TAFE for the past 16 years and been a head teacher for five years.

Mrs Colombini was described as an outstanding manager and extraordinary leader who inspired her staff, and had a strong commitment to the industry, which was reflected through her teaching.

“It’s a wonderful feeling and I was really surprised to win it because there were amazing colleagues in the category, so I thought I had no chance,” she said.

“It’s great to be recognised, and I love what I do.

“Every student’s needs are unique, and every story is different – I love connecting with that.”

Mrs Colombini says there is strong demand for more apprentices in the industry.

“It’s a growing services industry, and employers can’t get enough,” she said.

This year, the new alumni awards also congratulated the most outstanding graduates whose qualities of innovation, leadership and compassion made a difference.
