Apprentice spotlight: Caitlin's journey in construction

Caitlin’s story shows how passion, determination and the right support can help young women build confidence in construction.

Caitlin Young is proving that determination, passion, and the right support can help open doors to a rewarding career in the construction industry.

Currently undertaking a Certificate III in Carpentry with Eden Brae Homes through the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) Housing Construction stream, Caitlin's interest in the trade began while she was still at school. Alongside her studies, she attended TAFE one day a week to complete a Certificate II in Bricklaying, an experience that helped confirm her career aspirations.

Her passion for building can be traced back even further.

Fond memories of helping her dad with projects around the backyard sparked an interest in creating and building things with her hands, laying the foundation for a future career in the trades.

In January 2026, Caitlin commenced her carpentry apprenticeship. While excited about the opportunity, she was also aware of the challenges that can come with entering a traditionally male-dominated industry.

As she reflected on the experience, Caitlin said, "I was nervous before starting… it was something completely new."

Those concerns quickly eased once she joined the team at Eden Brae Homes. Supported by her employer and colleagues, Caitlin settled into the role and began developing both her skills and confidence on site.

Each day starts at 7am and can involve a variety of tasks, from screwing and bolting framework to assisting other tradespeople and learning new techniques. One of the achievements she is most proud of so far is learning how to read building plans and better understand how projects come together from start to finish.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Caitlin has also been supported by Apprenticeship Support Australia’s mentoring team. Through regular contact and guidance, she has developed a strong understanding of the support available to apprentices and has valued having people who, in her words, "Have her back".

Reflecting on her apprenticeship journey, Caitlin said, "Once I got started, I quickly felt at ease. There was a real sense of belonging from the beginning."

As she continues to build her skills and experience, Caitlin is also helping challenge perceptions about who can succeed in the construction industry. Her advice to other young women considering a trade career is simple:

"Don't be scared. Be yourself. And jump in with both feet."

With a growing skillset, a strong support network, and a genuine passion for the industry, Caitlin is building more than homes, she's building a successful career for herself in construction.
