Apprenticeship Support Australia helps women trade up to Sydney Trains

Apprenticeship Support Australia has helped sign up a record number of women to work in the traditionally male-dominated rail maintenance field; with five new recruits starting their careers this week with Sydney Trains.

The new apprentices will be training across four disciplines, including signal electrics, overhead wiring, telecommunications and electrical distribution, under the supervision of experienced rail maintenance specialists.

They will complete their apprenticeships after four years, after which time they will be graded and have the opportunity to apply for full-time roles within Sydney trains.

“Women are increasing their representation in occupations that used to be considered ‘men’s work’, such as engineering, information technology, and science technicians, according to research undertaken by Women NSW,“ says Apprenticeship Support Australia NSW General Manager, Andrew Williams.

ASA is committed to helping more women and girls ‘trade up’ to work in key industries seen as ‘non-traditional’ domains for females.

“We’re proud to have played a role in supporting Sydney Trains’ female apprentices to becoming qualified tradies,” Andrew said.
