Construction apprenticeship boost in Tasmania

Tasmania is building momentum in growing the skilled construction workforce needed to deliver more homes, with hundreds of apprentices commencing training under the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP).

New figures released to mark six months of the Housing Construction Apprenticeship (HCA) stream show the program is supporting apprentices and employers across the state to strengthen the skills pipeline critical to Tasmania’s housing needs.

Tasmanian uptake

In Tasmania there have been 267 housing construction apprentice commencements in the first six months of the Key Apprenticeship Program (1 July 2025 to 31 December 2025), delivered across 189 employers.

This includes:

  • 123 apprentices (46.1 per cent) aged 19 and under
  • 18 school based apprenticeships (6.7 per cent)
  • 16 female apprentices (6 per cent).

The most popular trades under the program reflect Tasmania’s current construction priorities:

  • Carpenters and joiners – 98 commencements (36.7 per cent)
  • Plumbers – 40 commencements (15 per cent)
  • Glaziers, plasterers and tilers – 33 commencements (12.4 per cent)
  • Floor finishers and painters – 28 commencements (10.5 per cent)
  • Electrical trades workers – 23 commencements (8.6 per cent).

The Key Apprenticeship Program helps apprentices start and finish training in trades essential to building more homes. Eligible apprentices receive up to $10,000 in incentive payments. Employers are also supported, with businesses able to claim up to $5,000 in the first year when they take on an apprentice through the program.

Federal Minister for Skills and Training Andrew Giles said: “Six months into the Key Apprenticeship Program it’s great to see so many Tasmanians taking up the tools to help us build more homes,” he said.
