Industry partnership opens apprenticeship pathways for skilled migrants

Supporting skilled migration pathways into apprenticeships is playing a critical role in addressing workforce shortages, with a South Australian initiative demonstrating this in real time.

Working alongside the South Australian Skills Commission, Eagers Automotive Limited, and the Motor Trade Association of SA and NT, Apprenticeship Support Australia supported 10 former international students to transition into Light Vehicle Mechanical Technician apprenticeships.

These individuals bring existing trade training and have completed formal skills assessments through the Occupational Recognition Service.

The initiative focuses on converting that expertise into recognised apprenticeship pathways, enabling employers to confidently onboard skilled talent while apprentices continue to build on their experience in a structured, supported environment.

Recent sign-ups with Nissan and Porsche dealerships highlight the potential of aligning skills recognition with industry demand and apprenticeship pathways.

The initiative points to a practical model for addressing skills shortages with both speed and integrity.

The approach in South Australia demonstrates the value of linking trade recognition with employment outcomes, while also reinforcing the role of collaborative partnerships in delivering workforce solutions.

By connecting people, policy and employers, the model is helping create pathways that work for individuals, businesses and the broader economy.
