When an Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) Area Manager Haylie Sloan saw an opportunity for a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery with Orange Ex-Services Club (OESC), she immediately had the perfect candidate in mind.

Haylie thought of Reba Scott, who always demonstrated interest in cooking, had an open attitude to learning and a solid work ethic, making her an excellent fit for the role. Wasting no time, she sent her resume to Dave Carsen, HR Manager at OESC.

Shortly after, Reba was invited for an interview and got the opportunity. She started her apprenticeship in late 2020 and has since successfully completed it, beginning her career journey as a chef. Crafting meals that bring people joy, peace, and fulfilment has been Reba’s biggest source of inspiration and gratitude. She says:

“Being a chef is not easy, but it’s very rewarding. Almost immediately after putting in the effort, you often see the delight and ease that sparks in people’s eyes when they see their meals arrive.”

Apprenticeship Support Australia is honoured to have been part of her professional path to becoming a chef. ASA completed her sign-up and provided support to Reba throughout.

“I am very grateful that I had the assistance and support of ASA along the way, especially Haylie, who guided me towards this opportunity”, Reba explains.

Fast forward to today, Reba has been selected as a top 10 finalist in the ‘Proud to be a chef’ program, a culinary mentoring program where 32 apprentice chefs from across the country will get the chance to participate in an all-expenses-paid experience. The four-day event will include masterclasses, skills workshops, dining at prominent restaurants, invaluable networking opportunities, industry leaders and program mentors and a first-ever farm trip to Victoria’s Gippsland region.

No doubt, this experience will catapult Reba’s culinary expertise even further. Apprenticeship Support Australia proudly supports Reba and aspiring apprentices and trainees alike.
