Natasha’s career in electric vehicles shifts into gear

Natasha Gibson has always had a strong interest in cars and knew she wanted to become a mechanic. Now, as a first-year apprentice EV technician with BYD in Prospect, she is turning that lifelong interest into a career in the growing electric vehicle industry.

“It’s been a family hobby for a long time, even though I’m the first in my family to formally work in this field. I was really motivated to turn something I’ve always been passionate about into a long-term career.” Natasha said.

Before starting her apprenticeship, Natasha knew the EV industry was expanding but had limited knowledge of the technology behind the vehicles.

“I knew that electric vehicles were becoming more common and that the industry was growing, but I didn’t fully understand how EV technology worked,” she said.

“Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve learned a lot more about how EVs operate and how different they are from traditional vehicles.”

Natasha begins each day by preparing for the work ahead, checking job lists, completing initial vehicle checks and getting cars ready for the hoist. She then works alongside qualified tradespeople to service vehicles and develop her technical knowledge.

“The best part is learning how cars work and building my skills, especially diagnosing problems,” Natasha said.

“I enjoy being hands-on and understanding how to fix issues rather than just guessing.”

Starting an apprenticeship also marked Natasha’s first experience working full-time. Adjusting to a new routine and having less time to see friends presented an early challenge, but support from her workplace helped her manage the transition.

“I leaned on support at work and asked questions when I needed help,” she said.

“I’ve learned who I can go to for support, and that’s helped me adjust both personally and professionally.”

Apprenticeship Support Australia supported Natasha through the sign-up process, helping her understand her apprenticeship pathway and the financial and non-financial assistance available to her. ASA has also maintained contact during the early stages of her apprenticeship, providing another source of guidance outside the workplace.

“Megan from ASA has checked in with me since being signed up too, which has helped me feel supported, and know I have someone to talk to if I need guidance,” Natasha said.

For Natasha, an apprenticeship offers the opportunity to earn an income while she works towards a nationally recognised qualification.

“An apprenticeship is a great way to learn because you’re gaining real experience while also working towards a qualification. You’re learning on the job, earning money, and building a career at the same time,” she said.

Her advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is to remain curious, seek support and persevere through the challenges.

“Keep learning, stay motivated, always ask for help if you need it, and keep your head up when things feel challenging. It’s all part of the learning process.”

Once qualified, Natasha hopes to continue working in the automotive EV industry and build her knowledge as vehicle technology evolves.

“Starting my apprenticeship has been a big milestone for me. I’m proud of how far I’ve already come, especially learning how to diagnose problems and understand vehicle systems,” Natasha said.

“This apprenticeship has helped me gain confidence, independence, and a clear pathway for my future career.”
